Man who took 'Poverty Vow' wins $259.8M in Powerball Jackpot

58-year-old Roy Cockrum struck gold when he won a total of $259.8 million in the Powerball jackpot in Tennessee. He had the option to receive the total sum of money over a period of time, or to accept a lump sum of $115 million. Naturally, he accepted the lump sum.

However, Cockrum is going to keep little to none of his winnings. Instead, he has publicly stated that majority of the money won will be used to start a foundation that will helps the performing arts organizations all around America.

“It’s going to be my job to work very hard to make sure that every single penny of this prize is a blessing to whoever it touches,” Cockrum said.

Bless his heart.

Cockrum worked for 20 years as an actor and stage manager for theater and TV productions, which is why he feels the need to donate the money to entertainment organizations.

Furthermore, Cockrum initially took the poverty vow after being asked during a religious service with The Society of Saint John the Evangelist, to follow the “Rule of Life”, which means to take “lifelong vows of poverty, celibacy, and obedience in an enduring fellowship.”
